regardingPurpose
This project seeks to extend a conversation between Jenelle Stafford and Anna Banerjee, initiated in response to screening the "Stay Flo" section of Solange Knowles' short film When I Get Home, which accompanies Knowles' fourth studio album by the same name. Through this website and the project at large, we seek to further investigate, interrogate, and interact with how the relationship between space and body constitutes various manners of meaning-making. A primary interest in the project is thinking about spaces of Blackness and navigating the complexity associated with occupying space in America as a settler-colonialist project. We bring in Cauleen Smith's 2018 film Sojourner to further elaborate on the role of specifically the American West and deserts as a place of aesthetic and academic interest. Other interests incorporated into the conception of the project include myth-making, digital spaces and bodies, and production and distribution of film. The project is constructed outward from the central discussion, operating as a tree trunk of sorts from which branches are extended to touch on adjacent issues, external scholarly analyses, and supplementary media and content. The guide below serves to streamline the original content of the project, but you are encouraged to explore the website and its connective branches on your own.
Purple links such as this indicate a continuing branch, as opposed to an external, supplementary link.
